There already was OTP and an email when logging in from a different region. If it at least made it convenient enough to not having to enter the credentials at all. This is just adding a annoying barrier for lots of us and I win nothing from it. Those who enter their FF credentials into some shady sites will also do the same with their Steam credentials. Probably more that don't come to mind now and may have been mentioned by others so you would have to change your Steam privacy settings everytime I sometimes just don't want others to see that I'm playing the game, I just want to chill out with a different character or so.

When a friends PC breaks down and they can't afford a proper new one immediately, I can't easily login with their account anymore (to save the house for example) without them giving their Steam credentials to me

When I'm visiting my friends I can't just use their launcher anymore and/or have to login using my own Steam credentials (which in turn starts random downloads and mods and breaks other things) So many people don't think of the further implications. What this means is that if I ever use a different steam account (say at my partner's PC or a friend) I will now have to log off their account just to get into my FF account where previously I can log in on any PC that has the steam version installed.įorget about having LAN parties at a LAN cafe with generic steam accounts that have the game, you now have to log into your personal steam account. Great, I'll do that and finally able to login to the steam launcher which forces me to link this steam account that I'm logged into with my SE account. I get an email (which is the wrong email, an old one I used to use and have not been able to change because the Square Enix website is a pain in the ass that for some reason WONT LET ME) telling me that I need to reset my password.
Now I had to go to the Square Enix site and guess what, my account is locked there as well. I tried to login to the game today using steam as I read this thread beforehand, instead of my usual shortcut on desktop straight to the launcher and I was greeted with a fun little notification warning me that my account is locked due to suspicious activity. It's like they are trying to make the game as difficult to play as possible on purpose.Īnyone who thinks this isn't a big deal has no idea what they're talking about. What's the point of making people enter their info every time if you're gonna freeze their account when they try to play on a different device anyway? And now they also have to be logged into Steam as well. Imagine if google fucking froze your account if you tried to log in on a new phone. Normally if you log in somewhere on a different device you just get an email saying "hey, is this you?". Even like the crappiest apps around have smarter and more hassle-free security than this.

On top of that XIV apparently has no concept of a trusted device so you have to enter your info EVERY single time you log in, and if you ever want to play on a different PC they will straight up lock your account unless you use a OTP, until you do a password reset. To this day I've never added OTP to the game because A: the game fully closes if you fail to connect to the datacenter (which can happen just from the servers being congested) forcing you to reauthenticate, and B: I reckon the chance of me losing my emergency removal password is a lot higher than the chance of me getting hacked. If you lose your emergency removal password for your OTP token, account gone. If you lose your steam account, that's it. It adds another layer of authentication, but the game already has OTPs and more authentication not only makes accessing the game more frustrating and difficult (when it's already one of the most annoying modern games to set up), it also adds additional points of failure.

The update has broken the game entirely for a ton of people preventing them from accessing it at all, which is the opposite of security. I don't see any benefit in Steam account linking. Even as someone who doesn't use the Steam version, Square Enix's approach to account management and security is just bonkers.
